    Why a blog

After months, no, years, the time has finally come: I have my own blog. The first question one might ask is: Why? Why, in the era of artificial intelligence, create a blog that will likely consist mostly of tutorials? Stackoverflow, YouTube, or even AI could arguably handle this task much more effectively.

    Silent Running

This is partly true. Stackoverflow has been helping me with questions about programming and IT in general for years. But using Stackoverflow can be cumbersome. The quality of the question often determines the success of the answer. Moreover, it can happen that I need several days to get a satisfactory answer.

YouTube can be helpful in gaining a basic understanding of various topics, learning basic mechanics, or improving general knowledge. However, the quality of the content heavily depends on the creator and is often not detailed enough.

Finally, we come to the current topic: the "AI". Without delving into the pros and cons, I just want to state that AI can do a lot, but not yet everything. It can be a useful tool if you know how to use it. Replicating human individuality, however, is not that simple. Believe me, AI is impressive and will soon dominate our daily lives, but human complexity is so much more complex, so we shouldn't worry too much. I will certainly go into more detail in a separate post, but at this point, I want to leave it at that.

So why did I create a blog that probably only a few will find? The answer(s) is quite simple. On the one hand, there are the reasons mentioned, on the other hand, I have high expectations of good content. Until now, I have created my documentation rather rudimentary and privately for myself in a wiki that only I had access to. But there lies the problem: The documentations are often not structured enough to be reused sensibly. They always required some rework when I needed them again after 1-2 years. Since the pressure for me wasn't that great to put more effort into creating them, this led to me having to read my own instructions for hours until I really understood what I had written. This sparked the desire in me to create my own blog. Even if potentially no one will read my post, the possibility that it could happen forces me to carefully design my instructions and thoughts for reproduction.

    Choice of name

Let's now come to the name selection of my blog. You might be asking yourself: "Why 'Sil3nt Running'?" Well, let me explain. As you might have already expected, I fulfill some typical IT cliches. And one of them is my love for Sci-Fi - yes, I'm a real nerd, but that's part of it (not necessarily).

    Silent Running Movie

There is a film that particularly shaped me: "Silent Running". A dystopian film that questioned the relationship between man and nature in the 70s and encourages us to rethink our behavior as humanity. Somehow the name stuck with me. And to stay true to the cliché, I replaced the "e" with a "3". No more and no less.

Another reason for the name choice was that I initially thought about starting this blog anonymously. However, this is not possible due to data protection regulations (GDPR) (because of the imprint obligation), so I decided to publish the posts under my real name. However, the blog name was already set and frankly, I found a blog named "gregor-wedlich.de" somewhat boring.

Moreover, I wanted to give others the opportunity to publish posts here. So, in line with the motto: "Everything is possible, nothing is compulsory". So, you are warmly invited to write me an email if you feel like publishing an article here. If you have something to say, let me know!

If you've read this far, you will have understood the primary reasons for this blog. But it's not just about tutorials and my opinion on various IT topics. I also want to write about everything that moves me, whether it's politics, music, or personal topics. I'm curious to see whether I'll be looking back on many interesting articles in a few years or whether the whole thing was just a nice idea.

Finally, I would like to mention something: I will probably write most of the posts in German, but as a challenge for myself, I plan to translate some articles into English. This forces me to improve in this language. So, please forgive me for any mistakes and kindly point them out. Feel invited to share your opinion with me. You can find me here via email or on Twitter, Instagram, or Github.

I wish you a great summer, a good time, and get out there! (-:
